Not just dinner and a show

This was way beyond ‘Dinner and A Show’. This was Ta-ke sushi and The Sleeping Beauty ballet at the Imperial Theater with our niece Ellen, on a Wednesday evening. How incredibly mid-week amazing is that?

Sleeping Beauty

Our culture meter just went up a few notches. This was my first ever ballet and I loved it, and it was Tchaikovsky! who, is Ellen’s favorite, AND did I mention there was sushi!

The three of us got together on Wednesday to celebrate the newness of spring. How fortunate we are to have our niece in the city where we can see her often. Ellen surprised us with tickets to the Jorgen Ballet production of Sleeping Beauty and was I ever surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I had never seen a ballet before and wasn’t sure I would “get it”… but I did! …thanks in part to watching the Disney movie many times with the kids, and also the skill and strength of the dancers…I wish I was in that kind of shape!

First, however,  we went for supper at out favorite sushi restaurant, Ta-ke Sushi on King Street. We sampled some old time favorites along with some new discoveries. So good… we will be back again soon, hopefully.

It was a wonderful night. Here are the photo highlights.

It was a very Good Friday

Did some stained glass in the morning, had a social visit from my buddy Ron, went to early dinner with Monica at Take Sushi on King Street and then home to blog it on this rainy Good Friday and also the 39th anniversary of our first date in Sackville in 1977. Life is grand.

Vacation Day – enjoyed

The day started with a rigorous exercise routine and sauna cleansing at the SJ Aquatic Center and then home to this wonderful breakfast of the brave and creative – fried eggs, pork pate and herb crusted goat cheese on gluten free toast…with skim milk. Oh, sooo goooood!!!!!

Morning chores included a trip to the city market, the jeweler’s to drop something off for repair and Kent’s to purchase the lumber for two new glass shop work tables (each 2’x4′). I’m looking forward to expanding my work surface area.

Afternoon was spent planning the glass shop floor layout and tasting assorted red wines (Smoky Bay Cab Sauv from Eastern Australia and Casa Monica Luna Rossa from Eastern Canada). We accentuated these wonderful wines with pizza Mediterranean style (gluten free for me, eh Maneau?).

Evening progressed through several Netflix episodes of something until sleepy eyes signaled time for bed. Vacation days as these are seductively luring. I’ll take another, please.

Mother’s Day means surf ‘n turf – love this day as much as the woman

This day was wonderfully relaxing at home with Mon. The morning was for quiet reflection on memories of our own mothers… may they rest in peace. Monica puttered in the kitchen making hash brown casserole and Caesar salad, catching up on Facebook and reading Chatelaine while I finished the Celtic Roundel project in my glass shop. Totally enjoyed this project. (see the full story and project photos under the Panels section).

At 4:00, the party began. Sarah and Matt arrived with the lobster and dessert. The casserole went into the oven, corks were popped, gifts were given, Ryan called to honor his mother and I cracked the lobsters and fired up the barbeque for the steak. Laughter and indulgence ensued. It was a generous day and we got lots of photos for reminiscing later (here are the highlights).

Happy Mother’s Day, Monica. You are the best… and there is no question We all love You.

Eating our way out of winter.

Most life forms that follows a seasonal pattern (like Canadians) take in a rush of nutrients in the spring. This is natural, and, oh so delicious in my case. Here’s a sampler of this week’s rush:

pork with raspberry sauce hamburger nachos and cheese Salmon Charlotte with potatoes, asparagus and salad ham & eggs and well done toast

In trying to stay productive enough to wear off the calories, Saturday’s are often a mad panic to get all the chores done and can result in back spasm if one is not careful. However, two loads of laundry and two carloads of recycleables/refundables, Market shopping, to Sears to buy a bed, then a Costco run, a trip to the Downey Stained Glass to get the glass for the celtic roundel and a visit to the garden center in Fredericton did help to work up an appetite. Solution: a friends-gathering in Fredericton Saturday evening sated the hunger as we feasted on Salmon Charlotte, dessert pastries and enough wine to sink a ship. The Reddons, the Carsons and the Alwards toasted the end of winter and a promise to gather again at the beach this summer.

Sunday: lazy day…more eating…playing with herbs…playing with glass….blogging.

Mediterranean Pizza Night – Viva!

Final night of the Easter long weekend. Absolutely content and grateful for this wonderful break. Many enjoyments this weekend from dinner with friends to stained glass to dinner with family to highway driving to quiet day at home playing with photos and blogging. And through it all, great food, great food and more great food. Here is the grand finale food photo gallery of Monday night supper…it ended so tasty.

I Luv Sushi

This is a sushi story:

Saturday dawned bright and beautiful. ‘Twas enough so to lift spirits up out of the potholes and above the snow banks on Mollins Dr. A hearty breakfast of Nelly Omelette provided the energy needed to empty the garage of recyclables and shovel off the garage roof, run grocery and hospital visitation errands, get the car washed (made me happy for 20 minutes), visit the Cedar Crest Market and get ready for a phenomenal meal with our niece, Ellen. Ellen got off work at the Delta Hotel at 3:30. We were there to greet and wisk her off across King Street to Take Sushi for late lunch/early supper. What a pig-out! Great food. Easy atmosphere. There was plenty for take home and that means I can’t wait for lunch tomorrow 🙂

2014 Haynes Lake Food and Drink festival winding down

Another great year, perfect weather, lots of laughs with old friends and, of course, focus on food and drink. Safe travels back to Ontario, Lorna and Peter. It was a slice. Thanks for the wonderful memories. Until next year, Salud!

Turkey Tale of the Dark Side

Saturdays just don’t come any better that this. Not only did I get to play with stained glass all morning which put me totally in the zone, I also got some major R&R in the afternoon watching Netflix with Monica and playing with photos for my blog. There may have appeared a martini at some point.

This was supper turkey plus extra turkey (breast and leg) …and we enjoyed it over the retelling of many family memories around the table.

Saturday night at the Alwards

All wrapped nicely around a glass of Pink Floyd Cabernet Sauvignon (Sarah and Ryan gave me this for Christmas). What a wonderful dining experience. Priceless by restaurant standards.

Just when you think that can’t get any better out came the Market Square pastries for dessert… hallelujah.

The evening entertainment billing was Game of Thrones…Season 3. Monica tried (fail) to stay awake while Ryan and I marathoned through the season. There’s always tomorrow to finish it 🙂Game of Thrones

Partridge Pot Pies for the Holidays

Monica is making partridge pot pies – how wonderful. We will take one to Dad in Havelock Christmas morning to have with him for lunch. He will be tickled especially since he and I got these together during hunting season – Hollywood style. Here is Monica at work in the kitchen…

Wednesday – Guess what we did today?

First, we worked all day (very productive) and then went chair shopping for Nelly. Stopped at at Leon’s (price too high) then to Lounsbury’s (perfect price/perfect chair… alabaster leather recliner swivel rocker made in Canada – thank you).

Then we tooted off  to supper at Boaz Sushi on the West Side of Saint John. So Good! This photo shows Deep Fried California Roll, Spider Roll (with deep fried clams), Spicy Crab Roll (very spicy) and classic California Roll. I love this place.Sushi at Boaz (deep fried California Roll, Spider Roll, Spicy Crab Roll and classic California Roll

After supper, we drove down to the Reversing Falls Park and walked down to the river’s edge. It was very high and dirty from the spring freshet. A kiss to Spring. All the birds were singing, it was sunny and warm. What a lovely afternoon. And then we headed off to Harbour High School for an evening of Fiddler on the Roof. Great Day – got to spend the best parts with my wife.
