Goodbye January – miss you already

Let it howl

Our lovely stretch of weather all through January is now, sadly, just a memory as tonight’s blizzard has arrived.

All the more reason to stay warm and dry in the studio. It’s nice to be back at it again since taking nearly a month off. Fingers that had gone soft over the break are just starting to get new callous’.

Marks of the trade

So, I guess winter is finally here. No matter, inspiration abounds and I’m already thinking spring.

Peninsula Retreat

Shortly after New Year’s 2018, Monica and I had the opportunity to dog-sit for our daughter and her partner at their house across the SJ river on the Kingston Peninsula. Sarah and Matt took a well-deserved week-long road trip to Niagara Falls leaving their 120 pound Rottweiler, Deacon, in our care. Can I just say, Deacon is a wonderful dog… so obedient and good-natured and energetic… I haven’t had this much exercise in months!

We moved in on a Tuesday and left the following Monday… 6 glorious days “away from it all”. We started the week with lovely cold clear skies. Then came horrible rains that took all the snow and terrible winds that felled some trees. During the storm, the power was out for 15 hours (loved it) and the cable snapped on the ferry so we were stranded (loved it). We finished the week again with lovely cold clear skies.

Even though we were only 30 minutes from Saint John, we may as well have been in Scandinavia. Hope you can tell from the photos how much we enjoyed our Peninsula Retreat.

Island Getaway

It was the first weekend in September and Monica and I decided to go south… to the islands of the Bay of Fundy. We booked a one-night vacation to a place we had not been in over 33 years since our honeymoon; Campobello. The weather was perfect and we were as excited as newlyweds to explore this beautiful marine ecosystem and rediscover the natural and historical wonders of the island.

Just 70 kms from our house to the hotel, we had lots of time to kill before check-in, so we started the journey with a full tour of Deer Island. We even stopped into the Original Pickle Guy‘s store (really funky) in Fairhaven but, sadly, he was not there. It’s a photographer’s dream here with the ever changing tides, the abundance of sea life and the quaintness of each buoy-adorned shed. We ended the morning tour with a yummy chicken salad lunch on the beach at Deer Island Point while waiting for the ferry to Campobello. I even ran into an old friend from NBCC – how delightful and sentimental to see her.

Arriving on Campobello at 1:00 pm we still had time to put in so we visited the stunning Herring Cove Provincial Park beach. Here we enjoyed a leisurely stroll looking for sea glass as the sun shone brightly on the calm ocean. Then off to find our accommodations at Campobello’s historic Owen House Country Inn and Gallery at Welshpool.

Built in1835 by Captain William Owen (Welsh), it is completely original and furnished throughout with antiques. We had the beautiful and spacious Captain’s room. Sitting on the edge of the coast, the view from the back lawn (and our room window) is across Welshpool Harbour to Friar’s Head. Surrounding the property are original English Oak trees planted by Captain Owen himself (183 years old). Today, the inn is owned and operated by artist, Joyce Morrell. The rooms are filled with her original watercolors of birds, still lifes and seascapes, some of which are for sale and all of which are fantastic.

The low tide today was at 4:00 pm so, after check-in, we set off to see the famously photographed Head Harbour Lighthouse. Clear blue skies and calm seas welcomed us as we descended and climbed our way across the exposed beach rocks and a bridge to see this magnificent structure with its distinctive red cross. It is immaculately maintained and was so spectacular on this clear day. Bonus, the crowd was very light making for easy and pleasant touring.

Leaving Head Harbour and with still a couple of hours of low tide left, we drove to the south of the island to Friar’s Bay to hike and see the monolithic rock formation on the shore called The Friar. Only accessible at low tide, you must follow a path through the woods to the shore and carefully navigate slippery seaweed covered rocks along the shore to see it. Monica was a trooper and we made it there and back with no mishaps.

The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying the beautiful inn and grounds including a nice glass of wine on the veranda. As the sun sank to the horizon, we strolled along the cliffside path to enjoy a mesmerizing sunset across the water to Eastport, Maine.

Next morning (Sunday), all eight guests at the inn gathered in the dining room for a home cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon. Three couples were from New Brunswick and one couple from New York. Nice to meet other people and share stories of travel and home.

Leaving the Owen House Inn, we made our way to the International Park (only one in the world) at Friar’s Bay to tour the Roosevelt Cottage. Monica remembers being here 33 years ago but I do not. Free admission (nice), it is beautiful (needless to say) and well preserved. Next door to the Roosevelt cottage, the recently renovated Hubbard cottage is also open for public tours. More ostentatious than the Roosevelt’s, the Hubbard’s were known at the entertainers of the neighborhood in the early 20th century.

We caught the 1:00 pm ferry back to Deer Island and stopped into the 45th Parallel restaurant at Fairhaven for a hearty meal of scallops and fish. To die for! As we were waiting for our orders to arrive, who should walk in bringing boxes of supplies to restock the shelves but the Original Pickle Guy, Ken Bustin (his store is right across the street where we stopped yesterday). Nice fellow, interesting to talk to and very accommodating for a photo. We bought four bottles of his pickles.

And that was a wrap. Even though we had been before, in just 30 hours we felt as if we’d had a week-long vacation to someplace new and undiscovered. Even then, there were things on both islands we did not have time to see… so that means a return trip! As much as Monica and I love to travel the world, it’s nice to know you can get that same adventurous lift so close to home.

2017 PEI Summer Vacation

That was the best four sun-filled (mostly) and fun-filled family vacation days on the beautiful north shore of Prince Edward Island. Monica and I along with Sarah and Matt, Carter and Connor and Ryan all shared a little cottage just 3 minutes from Brackley Beach. What a hoot! The sun and the sand, the awesome playground and pool, the excellent food and family stories around the campfire all made for a perfect weekend. Definitely bloggable! If a picture is worth a thousand words, here’s a few thousand. Cheers to PEI!

A July Journey

Monica and I had a fantastic trip this weekend to the top of the province to visit our friends, Diane and Chris Carson, at their cottage on beautiful Youghall Beach in Bathurst. On the way, we scratched of a local bucket list item and saw the remaining 5 bridges of New Brunswick’s 60 covered bridges, including one at the historic Village Acadien in Caraquet. Diane and Chris joined us in touring this historical settlement recreating the lives of the Acadien settlers from the mid 1700’s to the mid 1900’s. Totally fascinating and we had a ball interacting with the interpreters at each of the 30 or so building sites.

The weather all weekend was mostly excellent. There was just one little 30 minute rumble with Mother Nature on Sundy evening just as I was trying my hand at paddle boarding. A sudden squall whipped up bringing dramatic skies and turning the calm bay into a froth of white caps. Fortunately, I made it to shore with only one dumping. Nothing hurt but my pride. And then it was gone leaving the sky a flaming salmon pink.

On the way home, we visited Kouchibouguac National Park where we had camped 30 years ago. Great memories as we strolled along Kelly’s Beach. This is also the year of free Canadian National Park entrances. Love that! We also stopped into Richibucto River Wine Estate and sampled some really good wine while chatting with the owner, Alan Hudson. We bought a couple of bottles to take home.

It was a wonderful weekend. So nice to see friends and Monica was delighted to fulfil the bridges project in just less than a year. Can’t wait to see what she decides to explore next.

Family Gallery Hop

As a pre-father’s day celebration, Monica and I were treated today by our daughter, Sarah, to lunch uptown at Cask ‘n Kettle. Then the three of us enjoyed a round the block Gallery Hop to seven fine arts shops all within easy walking.

I am very spoiled and so fortunate and happy to be so.

Valentine’s Day 2017

The day started at 5:00 am with a rigorous session of driveway snow-blowing… didn’t care for that so much 😐

Then a couple of hours of soldering in the studio (really love that) turned out two celtic knotted crosses…. one for CraftologySJ and one for my sweetheart.

Lunch was a happy gorging uptown at Ta-ke Sushi… and then home with feet up for an afternoon of blogging and sipping great Tempranillo from Spain ☺ and making plans with Monnie for our spring road trip.

Isn’t life grand?

A glassy winter wonderland

Here it is, January 29, 2017 and we have grass showing through on the lawns… no snow. Strange winter but most folks are bracing for something still to come. We’re lucky here in the city. Outside of Saint John, the recent ice storm really put a lot of folks in the dark and cold for several days in some cases. However, today maybe a bit of promised sun will get Monica and I out for a walk.ready

I’ve been beating the winter blahs with some blogging (got some new dollar store glasses to try out) and getting lots of studio time, loving every minute. I recently completed a couple of sunflowers and am now working on some cardinals. All these birds and flowers have me yearning for spring. I can’t wait. Monica and I have a fun adventure planned if all goes well so stay tuned in April and May. Should be AMAZING!

Cheers and happy winter from Nellyglass Studio.

Pre Christmas Morning

Up at 5 AM and enjoying the crisp Saint John air. The grass is still showing here three days before Christmas but there’s a promise of a dusting coming. I couldn’t resist taking a photo of the pretty lights along with a zoom in of Monica in her morning ritual of coffee and i-pad surfing. Family is nearby, presents are gathering under the tree, there’s a wonderful feeling in my heart. Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas from Nellyglass Studio

What a wonderful season leading up to Christmas and quite possibly the best ride of my life so far. For me, the past few months have been all about, as Pink Floyd so eloquently puts it, “Marching cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream”. Monica and I are having a ball watching Nellyglass take off especially through CraftologySJ on Prince William Street. I’ve met many interesting people from the cruise ships and have seen some of you personally in the store during Uptown Sparkles. We want to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone who purchased something from Nellyglass this year. You’ve made my dream come true.

In addition to my Craftology sales, I’ve completed a few exciting commissioned panels as Christmas gifts for people. I can’t show these yet for risk of spoiling Santa’s surprise, but, Im sure I’ll share their stories and some photos after the big day.

I am so looking forward to 2017. One thing I will be doing early is upgrading my nellyglass wordpress site. In January, my website address will be simply nellyglass.com (no longer with the name wordpress in the address) plus the upgrade will remove all WordPress ads from the page and give me 3 more gigs of storage space 😏 … only waiting until January because it’s a new fiscal business year.

Until then, we’re wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year from Monica and Nelson at Nellyglass Studio.

fall leaves and covered bridges – a photo journal

Monica and I took and couple of days through the week leading up to Thanksgiving weekend to see the fall colors up the Saint John River and photograph some more of NB’s historic covered bridges. We drove to the northwest tip of New Brunswick to Lac Baker, home of our dear friend, Johanne Noel, and where I saw my favorite bridge to date. You’ll see why in the photos (hint: I was kissed in this bridge). We chased the bridges down the river staying the night in Perth-Andover and continuing next morning. In total we saw nine bridges and some of the most stunning fall foliage in the province. Here is the photo journal of the two days.

Art media medley

Artistic inspiration is all around this week in Saint John and I’m in pursuit with my camera, dragging Monica and others along with me. I see it everywhere; in glass, in stone, in food. It really lifts my spirits to look and find the beauty in this city so easily.

nellyglass Christmas tree
Christmas tree $33 (tax included) exclusively at CraftologySJ

Starting with stained glass, my latest Nellyglass endeavor is producing and selling my work through CraftologySJ on Prince William Street.  For the past three weeks, I have been in the studio designing and making Christmas trees, angels and other suncatchers to tempt the cruise ship traffic. There are more than 60 boats scheduled into port this fall, so I’m optimistic.

CraftologySJ features the arts and crafts from over 50 local artisans.CraftologySJ on Prince William Street You can find just about anything here for a one stop gift-shopping experience. It’s very cool and I’m excited to be part of the art scene in Saint John.

Just down on the harbour front beside market slip,  the international sculpture artists are finishing up their masterpieces for the 3rd Sculpture Saint John symposium. The finesse of the work is breathtaking partly due to the mass of the rocks themselves but mostly because of the talent (eight artists from Canada, USA, Greece, France and Italy selected from over 150 applicants).

These pieces are destined for permanent public display in various communities throughout NB. We strolled on Saturday with good friends from Moncton, met some of the artist’s and took lots of pics.

Art is not limited to traditional media… at our favorite sushi restaurant, Ta-ke Sushi, the chef takes great pride in presentation and the fish is always excellent.  We’ve eaten here many times and always leave satisfied and happy…especially when you can get a great lunch like this for less than  $10.

We love Saint John. It’s got lots of character and that means lots of artistic inspiration. I hope you find some here, too.

Labour Day Libations

Monica and I headed to Halifax with our good friends, Maneau and Jake, to enjoy and celebrate the labours of life and the harvest rewards. We packed a heap of fun and entertainment into our 48 hours including strolling along the Halifax boardwalk in the beautiful sunshine, eating and drinking many delicious things and an all-day 3-vineyards winery tour including lunch through Grape Escapes of Halifax. Highly recommend that. Great time. Great weather. Fortunate, we are. Here are the photos of the weekend.

24 hour wilderness therapy session

I’ve been working a lot in the studio lately. So, to relieve and revive, I went to the camp with Ron for an overnight getaway. Just what the doctor ordered. In addition to the wonderful nature exposure, I ate  enough to gain 6 pounds, lost at Cribbage and slept. It was great!! Oh yeah.

A rainy day in Saint John

Lots of rain this morning… hard rain, and wind. Looking out my back window at 7:00 am I see these two on the lawn. Mama put them down there while she foraged close by. As much as I complain about them eating my garden, they really are sweet. We are blessed to have nature this close.

Out for a Sunday drive

Mon and I just wanted to get out for a spin on this beautiful Sunday morning. We didn’t have to go far to find some new discoveries… three historic covered bridges that we had never visited before and all within 1 hour from home in the Hoyt area. The oldest (Smythe Bridge) dates to 1912 and the others to the mid 30’s. We also stopped at the Pattersonville historic village just out side of Hoyt for a minute. The school dates to 1873. All the buildings are well preserved and furnished with period furniture.  These wonderful old landmarks are priceless and we were glad to see them and take some photos.

Early April Light

Skies brighten at 6:30 now and this morning was exceptional. A little convalescence from a wrist boo-boo while playing with photos and dreaming of stained glass projects was wonderful in the sunshine of our living room. The light is inspiring, healing and healthy for mind, spirit and body. I’m seeing light prism colors splashed on the walls and my Grandfather and Great Uncle’s art illuminated in a slowly moving sMorning light with artpotlight.
