Since I moved on from sculpting (last summer), I missed having something to do with my hands. I’ve been searching for a craft where I can sit in my comfy chair… something to keep me busy and to replace the mindless online scrolling.
Monica has given me hope. For Christmas ’25, she gave me a beginner’s rug hooking kit with everything included to make a 4″ coaster … a cute little lighthouse on the rocks.
Monica also got me a couple of books on the topic of rug hooking by Nova Scotia artist Deanne Fitzpatrick. Easy reading with a story-like approach and very inspiring. Plus, I watched some of her YouTube videos. She makes it look so easy.
Early January ’26 was the deep freeze in Saint John. We had several consecutive days of -20 Centigrade so staying inside was the plan. It was the perfect time to try my hand at rug hooking and I was eager.

Let’s just say I still need lots of practice to get the hang of it. My poor little lighthouse looks like it’s ready to crumble onto the rocks and into the ocean.
I must say, though, I enjoyed it very much. I also enjoyed my comfy chair studio. This might be the craft I’ve been looking for. ☺️ Meanwhile, there is much to learn and I’m already thinking about what to try next.
