le Duo en Rose

the den window

No sooner had I finished the Art Deco Rose Lamp when Carrie Stevenson commissioned another project, her fifth in less than a year! Carrie and Jon have a den on the second floor with a beautiful bay window that looks out over Alexandra Street. The door to the den has a large clear 3’x2′ window which allows light (and neighbors’ sight) into the inner hallway. Privacy is the main concern here.

the approved sketch

Inspired by the Art Deco Rose motifs of Charlie Rennie Mackintosh, I sketched a design with roses intertwined on a lattice. The composition accentuates the vertical and horizontal lines in the doors and trim of the hallway. Is it Art Nouveau or is it Art Deco? I’m not sure myself, but by any other name would still look as lovely.

This project was an intense exercise in cutting curves. For the clear background, I used a sheet of vintage era Muranese textured glass. It is rare and exquisite in the light and I had just enough of this glass for the required pattern pieces. Same goes for those long curved green leaves so I told myself early on that mistakes were not allowed in cutting and grinding.

In the end, it turned out beautifully. The composition has a certain delicacy that I find enchanting and throughout construction I often found myself humming Edith Piaf tunes. I’m sure it will add an artistic flair to Carrie and Jon’s upstairs hallway and den and further enhance their beautiful heritage home.

I am delighted to present the making of le Duo en Rose.
