Great Blue Herons

Brother-in-Law, Ralph Taylor, put in a request some time ago for a Great Blue Heron panel. He reminisced seeing the herons fishing along the shoreline behind his former house at Shediac Cape. I never got around to making it while in full business mode so once I retired at the end of ’23, it was first up on my retired-to-do list.

Ralph and Georgie Lee’s apartment has beautiful full length windows that look out over the sun deck. Ralph envisioned his panel here as a scene in landscape mode. I sized it to 12″ x 24″.

Then I surfed the internet for inspiration and chose a couple of images that would fit my vision. I added a shoreline bank of grass and some cattails to break up the large sky pieces.

the approved sketch – more cattails were added on the right side

I worked on this piece in January ’24 while Ralph and his family were in Florida. I wondered if he would see any herons there. The weather in Canada was cold but this project kept me happily busy in my studio… dreaming of warm weather.

Here is a photo gallery showing the various stages of construction.

with Ralph and his herons

Monica and I visited Ralph and Georgie Lee in February to deliver and hang his panel for him. Ralph was excited and met us in the lobby of his apartment building. His enthusiasm is contagious and his appreciation was generous. I was absolutely delighted to make this panel for Ralph. I hope it takes him back to those summer days watching the herons at Shediac Cape.

I am very pleased to present Great Blue Herons.
