Geo Jake and Metric Maneau

Strange title, eh? I was going for poetic alliteration… something catchy. Later, however, I mused how the title hints at the personalities in this story.

kitchen window

This project had been in the queue for a few years. Our good friends, Maneau and Jake from Moncton, have always been faithful supporters of my work. Maneau mentioned one time that she would like a panel for her kitchen window. Luckily, my retirement coincided with her new kitchen renovations and the timing was perfect.

design options

When presented with three design options, Maneau and Jake chose the top one; a geometric pattern with various-sized blocks of glass. I love the geometric designs and have always wanted to make a panel in this style. The main artistic challenge was trying to design in a way that would incorporate and/or disguise the grids in the window.

grey glass from old friends

Maneau’s new kitchen color scheme is in tones of white, gray and black. Sorting through my glass inventory revealed some interesting patterns along with some very special glass acquired from a friend of Maneau’s mother. It’s nice to have a little nostalgia built in.

zoom shot of textures

I had fun playing with the pattern and I tweaked it several times as I sought balance in form and color. Sometimes, I appreciate it when Monica helps with the tweaking, as in this case. I also incorporated some beveled clear pieces and was able to find a different texture for each of the 24 clear blocks. In total, there are 47 pieces of glass.

ready for installation

As I was contemplating the title for this story, I reflected on the personalities of Jake and Maneau; he is calm, cool and steady (geo) and she is social and excitable in multiples of 10 (metric)… lol. There’s the symbolism I love. Along with the lyrical flow, it’s the perfect title.

I am delighted to present Geo Jake and Metric Maneau.
