I needed more practice in creating tall free-standing sculptures. I had abstract on the brain and wanted something curvy. In the design phase, I included lots of empty space in the top two-thirds. This lowers the center of gravity for better stability. Then I added a small sphere on a steel rod in the center for interest.
Originally, I was going for a contemporary Greenman (mythological protector of gardens). This is clearly not that but I still wanted to reference ancient mythology in the naming. That central sphere does resemble an eye. So, I named it Cyclops. It was a wonderful afternoon of designing and pattern making.
Building the support form was an exercise in bending steel rods and shaping hardware cloth (wire mesh). I love rainy days in the studio when there’s no call to be outside. Here are some construction pics.

In Greek mythology, Cyclops was known for its great strength. So, I’m hoping my sculpture will honor that trait and not fall apart too soon (lol). I gave it a green eye (because I have green eyes) and a green body so it would blend into the gardens.

I like the height and shape and I like the abstract curiosity. Thanks for reading. This is Cyclops.
