Awareness

sketch work

This started out as a Celtic knot but it evolved into something more like a support ribbon… like those magnetic ones you see on people’s cars. So, I went with it. Later on when deciding what color to paint it, I searched online for the common support ribbon colors. Wow! There are so many causes for each of the seven colors of the light spectrum.

This is not a complete list of every awareness associated with each color but rather a short-list representation.

  • Red– blood disorders, heart, stroke, burn, breast cancer (pink)
  • Orange– MS, leukemia, spinal and kidney cancer
  • Yellow– troops, suicide, missing children, bladder cancer
  • Green- cervical and liver cancer, depression, cerebral palsy
  • Blue- pro choice, anti-bullying, addiction, prostate cancer
  • Indigo- epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, bowel disorders, child abuse
  • Violet- Hodgkin’s disease, testicular cancer, religious tolerance

I know people from every color group who are dealing with something that deserves support and/or awareness. I couldn’t choose just one color so I used them all and gave it the title Awareness.

This was a great little time-passer project. I enjoyed the rainy-day studio time and learned some new sculpting tricks. But it’s the subject matter that left the biggest impression on me. Now, whenever I see this piece in the garden or a magnetic support ribbon on somebody’s car, I’ll be a bit more aware of the struggles of people everywhere.
